Equipment

  • Large skillet
  • Wooden spoon or spatula
  • Measuring cups
  • Measuring spoons

Ingredients

Ingredients

  • 4 cups plain toasted oat cereal
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt plus more to taste

Instructions

  • Set a large skillet over medium heat and add the butter. Let it melt completely, swirling the pan so the bottom is coated.
  • Pour in the toasted oat cereal and stir to coat every piece with the melted butter.
  • Cook, stirring frequently, until the cereal smells toasty and looks lightly golden, about 4 to 6 minutes. Adjust the heat as needed so the butter doesn’t brown.
  • Sprinkle the salt over the cereal and toss to distribute evenly. Taste and add a pinch more salt if desired.
  • Serve warm, or let cool completely for extra crunch.

Notes

For a savory twist, add a pinch of garlic powder along with the salt. For sweet, swap the salt for 1 to 2 teaspoons of cinnamon sugar. Store cooled leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. Stir constantly near the end to prevent scorching and keep the cereal crisp.
