Detailed Step-by-Step Instructions
Making Jam Shortbread Bars is a delightful baking journey that brings together the richness of butter and the sweetness of jam in a simple yet delicious treat. Let's break down the process:
- Preheat and Prep: Start by heating your oven to 350°F and lining an 8x8 inch baking pan with parchment paper. This ensures easy removal and clean cuts later.
- Creaming the Base: In your mixing bowl, combine room-temperature butter, light brown sugar, and vanilla extract. Cream them until you achieve a smooth, fluffy mixture. This step is crucial for a light texture.
- Incorporating Dry Ingredients: Gradually mix in the flour and salt at a low speed. Watch as the mixture transforms into a crumbly dough - the base of your shortbread.
- Assembling the Base: Press ¾ of this dough into your prepared pan, creating a flat and even layer. This will be the sturdy, crumbly foundation for your jam.
- Adding the Jam Layer: Spread your chosen jam evenly over the shortbread base. This layer of fruity sweetness complements the buttery shortbread perfectly.
- Topping It Off: Sprinkle the remaining crumble dough on top of the jam. This adds a delightful texture and visual appeal to the bars.
- Baking to Perfection: Bake for 25-30 minutes until the bars turn a lovely golden color. This golden hue is your cue that they're baked just right.
- Cooling: Let the bars cool completely in the pan. If you're in a hurry, pop them in the fridge to speed up the process.
- Serving and Enjoying: Once cooled, cut the bars into your desired size and enjoy the harmonious blend of crumbly shortbread and sweet jam.
Storage Options
Jam Shortbread Bars are not just delicious; they're also easy to store! After they've cooled, place them in an airtight container. They can stay fresh at room temperature for up to 4-5 days, making them perfect for gradual indulgence. For longer storage, you can freeze them for up to 3 months. Just wrap them individually in plastic wrap and then store in a freezer-safe container. Thaw at room temperature for a few hours before serving.

- 1 Cup of Unsalted Butter at room temperature
- ½ Cup of Light Brown Sugar
- 1 Teaspoon of Vanilla Extract
- 2 Cups of All-Purpose Flour
- ¼ Teaspoon of Salt
- ½ to ¾ Cup of Jam any flavor
Instructions
- Preheating and Pan Preparation: Initiate by preheating the oven to a temperature of 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Concurrently, prepare an 8x8 inch square baking pan by lining it meticulously with parchment paper.
- Creaming Process: In a mixing apparatus equipped with a paddle attachment, commence by creaming together the unsalted butter, light brown sugar, and vanilla extract. Continue this process until the mixture attains a uniform and fully combined consistency.
- Dry Ingredients Incorporation: With the mixer set to a low speed, gradually introduce the all-purpose flour and salt into the butter mixture. Continue this process until the mixture achieves a crumbly texture, indicative of the correct consistency.
- Base Assembly: Carefully transfer approximately three-quarters of the shortbread dough into the previously prepared pan. Press down uniformly to create a flat and even surface, thereby forming the base layer of the shortbread.
- Jam Layer Application: Proceed to evenly spread the jam of your choosing over the surface of the shortbread base. This layer should be uniformly applied to ensure consistent flavor distribution.
- Final Layering: Utilize the remaining crumble of shortbread dough by scattering it over the top of the jam layer. This will form the final layer of the bars.
- Baking: Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for a duration of 25 to 30 minutes. The indication of completion is the shortbread attaining a light golden coloration.
- Cooling Process: Upon removal from the oven, allow the Jam Shortbread Bars to cool completely within the pan. If time constraints exist, an alternative is to expedite the cooling process by refrigerating.
- Serving Preparation: Once the bars have cooled, extract them from the pan and proceed to cut them into the desired shape and size. They are now ready to be served or stored as required.
