Ingredients Notes and Tips

The Broccoli Chicken Divan recipe stands out for several compelling reasons that make it a cherished choice among home cooks:

• Fresh Broccoli: The star of the dish, providing not only a vibrant color but also essential nutrients. Fresh is best for texture and flavor.
• Cooked Chicken: Ideal for repurposing leftover chicken or making use of pre-cooked options for a quicker preparation.
• Condensed Cream of Broccoli Soup: Forms the creamy base that envelops the chicken and broccoli, enriching the dish with a smooth, velvety texture.
• Milk: Thins the soup to the perfect consistency for baking without diluting the flavor.
• Shredded Cheddar Cheese: Adds a gooey, melty element with a sharpness that contrasts beautifully with the mild flavors of chicken and broccoli.
• Butter and Bread Crumbs: Combine to create a golden, crispy topping that gives the dish its satisfying crunch.

How To Make Broccoli Chicken Divan

To craft the Broccoli Chicken Divan, begin by readying your kitchen environment for efficient baking. The preparation involves boiling, whisking, assembling, and baking, which are all executed with precision to create this sumptuous dish.

• Serve and Enjoy: Once baked, remove the dish from the oven and let it stand for a few minutes. This brief resting period allows the bubbling to subside and the layers to settle, making it easier to serve. The Broccoli Chicken Divan is now ready to be enjoyed, ideally while warm, to appreciate the full spectrum of its creamy, cheesy, and crunchy textures.
• Preheat the Oven: Initiate the process by setting your oven to a robust 450 degrees Fahrenheit. This high temperature is crucial as it ensures a beautifully golden and crispy topping upon completion.
• Prepare the Broccoli: Place the freshly chopped broccoli into a large saucepan, and submerge it in water. Bring the water to a rolling boil — a vigorous boil ensures the broccoli becomes tender yet retains a slight crunch, ideal for the final bake. After about 5 minutes, remove the pan from the heat, drain the broccoli to remove all excess water, and set it aside. This step is fundamental as it prevents the final dish from becoming too watery.
• Assemble the Base: Take a 9-inch pie plate and lay the blanched broccoli as the first layer. This creates a green bed on which the rest of the ingredients will rest. Over this, evenly distribute the cooked, bite-sized chicken pieces. The chicken adds a hearty texture and protein to the dish, complementing the softness of the broccoli.
• Create the Cream Sauce: In a clean mixing bowl, combine the condensed cream of broccoli soup with milk. Whisk them together until you achieve a smooth, uniform liquid without lumps. This mixture should have a creamy consistency that will envelop the chicken and broccoli, infusing them with moisture and flavor. Pour this blend over the chicken and broccoli in the pie plate, ensuring it seeps into every layer.
• Add Cheese and Breadcrumbs: Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese over the creamy sauce, covering the surface evenly. The cheese will melt during baking, adding a rich, gooey texture and sharp taste that contrasts with the mild broccoli and creamy sauce. Following the cheese, mix the melted butter with dried breadcrumbs until the mixture resembles coarse, wet sand. This is then evenly sprinkled atop the cheese layer, which will form a crisp, golden crust as it bakes, offering a delightful crunch.
• Bake to Perfection: Place the pie plate in the preheated oven and bake for 15 minutes. During this time, the top should become golden and the cheese bubbly, with the edges perhaps pulling slightly away from the sides of the plate — signs of a perfect bake. The high heat ensures that the dish is heated through, melding all the flavors while creating a texturally pleasing top layer.

Storage Options for Broccoli Chicken Divan

Broccoli Chicken Divan keeps well both in the refrigerator and the freezer, making it a fantastic make-ahead meal. For refrigeration, store in an airtight container for up to three days; reheat in the oven or microwave until hot throughout. For longer storage, freeze the dish in a sealed container for up to two months. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight and reheat in the oven for best results, allowing the dish to regain its texture and flavor.

This recipe is wonderfully adaptable, inviting various tweaks to suit different tastes or dietary needs:
