Ingredients Notes
Diving into our Baked Ziti recipe, the choice of ingredients is pivotal to nailing that authentic taste and creamy texture. Here’s what to keep in mind:
- Ziti Pasta: Essential for the structure, ziti’s tube shape holds cheese and sauce beautifully.
- Ricotta Cheese: Adds creaminess; for best results, choose full-fat for richer flavor.
- Mozzarella Cheese: Provides that delightful stringy cheese pull. Use low-moisture mozzarella for less liquid in the final dish.
- Parmesan Cheese: Introduces a nutty, salty depth. Freshly grated has the best flavor.
- Spaghetti Sauce: The backbone of the dish’s flavor profile. A robust, herb-filled sauce works wonders.
- Egg: Acts as a binder for the cheeses, ensuring they don’t separate during baking.
How To Make Baked Ziti Recipe
Embarking on the Baked Ziti journey means beginning with the basics—preparing your ingredients and equipment. Here’s how to ensure each step is performed to perfection:
- Preheat and Prep: Start by heating your oven and greasing your baking dish. A properly greased dish means no sticking and easy serving.
- Boil the Pasta: Cooking the ziti to al dente is crucial; it should be just firm enough to hold up under the layers of cheese and sauce.
- Mix Ingredients: Combine your cooked pasta with the cheeses and beaten egg thoroughly to ensure each noodle is coated in the creamy cheese mixture for maximum flavor.
- Assemble in Dish: Layering is the fun part. Pour your pasta mixture into the dish, top with sauce, and a final sprinkle of Parmesan for that crispy top layer.
- Bake to Perfection: Bake until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown. Letting it stand after baking is essential for the flavors to meld and the dish to set, making serving easier.
Storage Options
Post-feast, if you find yourself with leftovers, Baked Ziti offers fantastic storage flexibility. It can be refrigerated for up to 5 days in an airtight container. For longer storage, freeze it in suitable portions for up to 2 months. Reheat in the oven or microwave, adding a splash of water if it seems dry.
Variations and Substitutions
Our Baked Ziti is wonderfully versatile, easily adapted to suit different tastes or dietary needs. Here are some tweaks you can try:
- Gluten-Free: Swap traditional ziti for a gluten-free pasta option to cater to those with dietary restrictions.

Instructions
- Preheat the Oven: Initiate by setting the oven temperature to 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190 degrees Celsius). Concurrently, apply a light coating of non-stick cooking spray or butter to a 9x13-inch baking dish to prevent sticking.
- Prepare the Pasta: Fill a large pot with water, season with a pinch of salt, and bring to a vigorous boil. Submerge the ziti pasta in the boiling water and cook for approximately 8 to 10 minutes, until it is al dente. Once cooked, drain the pasta and rinse under cold water to halt the cooking process.
- Combine Ingredients: In a medium mixing bowl, amalgamate the cooked ziti, ricotta cheese, mozzarella cheese, and the beaten egg with 1 and ½ cups of spaghetti sauce. Stir the mixture until each ingredient is evenly distributed throughout.
- Assemble the Dish: Transfer the pasta mixture into the prepared baking dish, spreading it out evenly. Layer the remaining spaghetti sauce over the pasta and garnish the surface with the grated Parmesan cheese.
- Bake: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the cheese has melted thoroughly. After baking, remove the dish from the oven and let it rest for 15 minutes to allow the ingredients to settle and the flavors to meld together.
