Ingredient Notes

When setting out to make these exquisite Creme Brûlée Cookies, choosing the right ingredients is crucial for achieving that signature luxury. Here's a breakdown to help you get the best results:

• Butter: Use unsalted and let it soften to room temperature for a creamy and smooth cookie batter.
• Sugars: A mix of brown and granulated sugars in the cookie dough offers depth and moisture, while granulated sugar for the topping provides the ideal texture for caramelization.
• Egg: Essential for binding the dough, ensuring your cookies don’t crumble.
• Vanilla Extract: Pure vanilla extract will give both the cookie and the frosting a rich, aromatic base.
• Flour: All-purpose flour keeps the cookie structure balanced—not too soft, not too firm.
• Cream Cheese: Opt for full-fat cream cheese for the frosting to ensure a creamy, spreadable consistency.
• Powdered Sugar: This fine sugar blends smoothly into the frosting, avoiding any grittiness.

How To Make Creme Brûlée Cookies

Begin your baking adventure with these Creme Brûlée Cookies by gathering all your ingredients and prepping your space for an enjoyable baking experience.

1. Prepare for Baking: Start by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lining your cookie sheets with parchment paper. This ensures your cookies will lift easily without sticking or breaking.
2. Cream the Butter and Sugars: In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter with brown and granulated sugars until the mixture is light and fluffy. This incorporates air into the butter, helping the cookies to rise properly during baking.
3. Incorporate Egg and Vanilla: Add the egg and vanilla extract to your creamed butter and sugars. Mixing these in thoroughly ensures a uniform flavor and texture in your dough.
4. Combine Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, cornstarch, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add this to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined to prevent overworking the dough which can lead to tough cookies.
5. Shape and Bake: Use a small scoop to form balls of dough, placing them on your prepared sheets. Flatten them slightly; this helps them bake evenly. Bake until the edges just begin to turn golden, which should take about 9 to 10 minutes, then let them cool slightly before moving them to a wire rack.
6. Prepare the Frosting: While the cookies cool, whip up the frosting by beating the cream cheese until smooth, then mixing in powdered sugar and vanilla until creamy.
7. Assemble and Caramelize: Spread the frosting on the cooled cookies, then dip each frosted top into granulated sugar. Just before serving, caramelize the sugar with a kitchen torch to form a shiny, crackled top layer.

Storage Options

These Creme Brûlée Cookies are best enjoyed fresh but can be stored to extend their indulgence. Keep them refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 4 days. The cool environment helps maintain the frosting’s texture and the cookies’ moisture. For longer storage, you can freeze the unfrosted cookies for up to a month, then thaw, frost, and caramelize them just before serving to revive their fresh-baked magic.

Variations and Substitutions

The Creme Brûlée Cookies recipe is versatile, allowing for adaptations to suit different tastes or dietary needs:

• Gluten-Free Flour: Substitute the all-purpose flour with your favorite gluten-free blend to cater to those with gluten sensitivities.
• Vegan Options: Use plant-based butter and a vegan cream cheese alternative, along with a suitable egg substitute like a flax egg, to make these cookies vegan-friendly.
• Flavor Twists: Add a dash of cinnamon or nutmeg to the cookie dough for a warm, spiced version, or mix a little orange zest into the frosting for a citrusy lift.
• Sugar Alternatives: For a less refined sugar option, coconut sugar can replace both brown and granulated sugars in the cookie dough, offering a deeper flavor profile.

These Creme Brûlée Cookies are a delightful blend of textures and flavors, a testament to the joy of creative baking and the pleasures of a well-made treat.
