Ingredients Notes
When preparing your French Onion Potato Bake, each ingredient brings something special to the table:
- White Potatoes: Opt for high-starch potatoes like Russets for the best soft interior and a slightly crispy edge.
- French Onion Soup Mix: This is the secret weapon for deep, complex flavor without the fuss of homemade soup stock.
- Caramelized Onions: Adding brown sugar to the onions as they cook transforms them into a sweet, golden topping that perfectly complements the savory potatoes.
- Rosemary: Its needle-like leaves are robust enough to withstand the cooking process, infusing the dish with a piney aroma and a fresh, earthy flavor.
How To Make French Onion Potato Bake
Let's break down the French Onion Potato Bake into manageable steps for a foolproof cooking experience:
- Preparation: Start by preheating your oven and preparing your ingredients. Peeling and chopping the potatoes ensures they cook evenly, while thinly slicing the onions and garlic maximizes their flavor release.
- First Baking Phase: Toss the potatoes with butter and garlic in your roasting pan, then sprinkle with the French onion soup mix. The boiling water added next helps to create a steamy environment in the oven, which is key for softening the potatoes while infusing them with flavor. The addition of rosemary sprigs introduces a subtle, herbal undertone.
- Caramelizing Onions: While the potatoes begin their roasting journey, it’s time to caramelize the onions. This slow cooking method brings out the natural sweetness of the onions, enhanced further by a sprinkle of brown sugar. Patience is key here; let them get gorgeously golden.
- Final Baking Phase: Combine the components by spooning the caramelized onions around the partially cooked potatoes, and bake until everything is beautifully tender and the flavors have melded together. A final sprinkle of fresh rosemary before serving adds both color and a fresh burst of flavor.
Storage Options
The French Onion Potato Bake is not only delicious fresh out of the oven but also stores wonderfully. Here's how you can keep enjoying it:
- Refrigeration: Cool the dish completely and store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to four days.
- Freezing: For longer storage, freeze portions in freezer-safe containers for up to a month. Reheat in the oven to restore its crispy edges and warm center.
- Reheating: Whether thawed or refrigerated, cover the bake with aluminum foil and reheat in the oven until heated through. This method helps retain moisture and flavor.
Variations and Substitutions
The French Onion Potato Bake is adaptable to various tastes and dietary needs:
- Different Potatoes: Try using red potatoes or a mix of white and sweet potatoes for a different flavor profile and texture.
- Cheese Please: For a cheesy twist, sprinkle grated Gruyère or Parmesan over the top before the final baking phase; it melts beautifully and adds a rich depth.
- Vegan-Friendly: Substitute the butter with a plant-based butter alternative and check that your French onion soup mix is vegan to cater to dietary preferences.
- Herb Variations: While rosemary is classic, thyme or a mix of Italian herbs can also complement the savory notes of the onions and potatoes.
Recipe Card
French Onion Potato Bake
Ingredients
- 1.25 kg of white potatoes peeled and cut into 4 cm pieces
- 50 g of unsalted butter finely diced
- 1 clove of garlic thinly sliced
- 40 g of French onion soup mix
- 375 ml of boiling water
- 2 sprigs of fresh rosemary
- 15 ml of extra virgin olive oil
- 2 brown onions finely sliced
- 15 ml of brown sugar
- Additional fresh rosemary for garnishing
Instructions
- Initial Preparation: Begin by preheating your oven to 200°C (or 180°C with fan assistance). Ensure that the rack is positioned in the middle of the oven to promote even cooking.
- Potato Preparation: In a large roasting pan, combine the peeled and cut potatoes with the finely diced butter and sliced garlic. Toss these ingredients together to ensure the potatoes are evenly coated. Proceed to evenly sprinkle the French onion soup mix over the potatoes, then carefully pour the boiling water over the mixture. Add the rosemary sprigs to the pan, and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.
- First Baking Phase: Place the roasting pan in the preheated oven and bake for 30 minutes. Halfway through the baking time, stir the potatoes to ensure they are evenly cooking and absorbing the flavors.
- Onion Caramelization: While the potatoes are baking, heat the olive oil in a medium frying pan over medium-low heat. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, for 10 minutes or until they begin to soften. Sprinkle the brown sugar over the onions, and continue to cook, stirring occasionally, for an additional 5 minutes or until the onions are well caramelized. Remove from heat once done.
- Final Baking Phase: After the initial 30 minutes of baking, remove the roasting pan from the oven. Spoon the caramelized onion mixture around the potatoes in the pan. Return the pan to the oven and bake for a further 5 to 10 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender to your liking.
- Serving: Once baking is complete, remove the pan from the oven. Discard the rosemary sprigs and serve the potatoes hot, garnished with additional fresh rosemary.
