We mixed, shaped, and baked, watching these little green globes turn golden in the oven. The result was magical. Ingredients Notes

To whip up these delectable Baked Broccoli Cheese Balls, you'll need a handful of straightforward ingredients. Here’s the rundown:

• Broccoli florets: These are the star of the show, providing not only a great texture but also a boost of nutrients.
• Grated cheese: You can choose any type of cheese you love or have on hand. It melts into the broccoli, giving these balls their irresistible gooey center.
• Panko breadcrumbs: These add a light, crispy texture to the exterior of the balls, contrasting beautifully with the soft interior.
• Onion and garlic: These aromatics bring depth and flavor, making the cheese balls more savory.
• Eggs: Acting as the glue holding everything together, eggs help to bind the ingredients so they don’t fall apart during baking.
• Salt and pepper: Simple seasonings to enhance the overall flavor of the balls.

How To Make These Baked Broccoli Cheese Balls

Ready to get baking? Follow these simple steps to create your very own batch of Baked Broccoli Cheese Balls, perfect for any occasion:

1. Cook the Broccoli: Begin by boiling your broccoli florets until they are soft, which typically takes about 5-7 minutes. Drain them well and transfer to a mixing bowl. This step is crucial as soft broccoli will mash easily and mix well with other ingredients.
2. Mix Ingredients: To your softened broccoli, add the grated cheese, breadcrumbs, finely chopped onion, minced garlic, eggs, and a good pinch of salt and pepper. Stir everything together until you achieve a uniform mixture. The cheese will melt slightly, helping to bind the mixture.
3. Form the Balls: With clean hands, scoop out a heaping tablespoon of the mixture. Press and roll it in your palms to form a tight ball. This process can be a bit sticky, so having slightly wet hands helps prevent the mixture from sticking to you.
4. Bake: Arrange the formed balls on a greased wire rack placed over a baking sheet. This setup helps to cook the balls evenly from all sides, ensuring a crispy finish. Bake in a preheated oven at 300°F for 20-25 minutes, or until they are golden brown and firm.
5. Enjoy: Serve the hot, crispy broccoli cheese balls fresh from the oven. They’re best enjoyed warm, but they’re also surprisingly tasty at room temperature.

Storage Options

To keep leftover Baked Broccoli Cheese Balls, allow them to cool completely before transferring them to an airtight container. They can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. For longer storage, freeze them on a baking sheet before transferring to a freezer-safe bag or container where they can last for up to a month. Reheat in the oven or microwave until warm and crispy.

Variations and Substitutions

This recipe is wonderfully adaptable, making it easy to adjust based on what you have on hand or your dietary preferences:

• Vegetable Variations: Mix in or substitute finely chopped spinach, cauliflower, or carrots to add different flavors and nutrients.
• Cheese Options: Experiment with different cheeses like sharp cheddar, mozzarella, or a smoked gouda for a change in flavor profile.
• Breadcrumb Alternatives: For a gluten-free version, use gluten-free breadcrumbs or finely ground almond flour as a binder.
• Adding Protein: Include some chopped cooked bacon or ham for a meaty twist, which complements the cheesy flavor beautifully.
• Spice It Up: Add a dash of red pepper flakes, cayenne pepper, or your favorite seasoning blend to give these cheese balls an extra kick.

Each variation allows you to personalize the recipe, making these broccoli cheese balls a versatile choice for any meal setting.
