The magic of Cheesy Rice lies in its simplicity, but don't let the short ingredient list fool you, each component brings something special to the table:
- Steamed Rice: Works well whether it's freshly made or from leftovers, ensuring nothing goes to waste.
- Sour Cream: Adds a rich creaminess that balances the sharpness of the cheese.

- Cayenne Pepper: Just a teaspoon transforms the dish from plain to piquant with a gentle kick.
How To Make Cheesy Rice
Making Cheesy Rice is as straightforward as it is delightful. Here’s how to bring this creamy comfort food to your table:
- Preparation of the Baking Dish: Start by lightly greasing your baking dish. This small step helps in easy serving and cleaning up later.
- Mixing Ingredients: In your prepared dish, combine the hot or cold steamed rice with sour cream, grated cheddar cheese, and cayenne pepper. The heat from the rice helps in melting the cheese and blending the flavors nicely, especially if using right after cooking.
- Baking to Perfection: Place the dish in a preheated oven at 350 degrees. The bake time is about 20 minutes, or until the dish is thoroughly heated and the cheese has beautifully melted into a bubbly, golden brown layer of deliciousness.
Storage Options
Cheesy Rice is best enjoyed fresh, but if you find yourself with leftovers, they can be stored in the refrigerator for up to three days. Ensure it’s tightly covered or stored in an airtight container. To reheat, simply microwave it on high for a couple of minutes or warm it in the oven until heated through. The texture remains surprisingly creamy upon reheating, making it a joy to savor even on the second round.
Variations and Substitutions
Cheesy Rice is wonderfully adaptable, allowing you to tweak it to suit your taste or dietary needs. Here are a few ideas to get you started:
- Dairy-Free: Swap the sour cream and cheddar cheese for your favorite non-dairy alternatives. Many stores offer plant-based versions that melt well.
- Spice Variations: Adjust the heat by increasing or reducing the cayenne pepper, or experiment with different spices like black pepper or paprika for a change of flavor.
- Cheese Varieties: While sharp cheddar is a classic, mixing in other cheeses such as mozzarella for stretchiness or a smoked gouda for depth can create new flavor profiles.
- Add-Ins: Feel free to stir in some chopped herbs, cooked bacon bits, or diced jalapeños to elevate this simple dish into something extraordinary.
Recipe Card
Cheesy Rice
Ingredients
- 2 cups of steamed rice which may be utilized either hot or cold
- 1 cup of sour cream
- 1 cup of finely grated cheddar cheese preferably sharp, though alternatives may suffice
- 1 teaspoon of cayenne pepper
Instructions
- Preparation of Baking Dish: Initially, ensure the baking dish is adequately greased to facilitate ease of serving and subsequent cleaning. This is a preparatory step crucial for successful culinary execution.
- Combination of Ingredients: In the previously prepared dish, amalgamate the steamed rice—either freshly prepared or from prior meals—with the sour cream, grated cheddar cheese, and cayenne pepper. If the rice is utilized immediately after cooking, it will assist in the melting of the cheese and integration of the various components.
- Baking Process: Convey the dish to an oven preheated to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. The concoction should bake for approximately 20 minutes, or until it is adequately heated and the cheese has melted into a visually appealing, golden brown presentation. Ensure the entire mixture is evenly heated and the surface is bubbling before removal from the oven.
