How To Make Chicken with Garlic Mushroom Sauce
Let’s break down the recipe into detailed, easy-to-follow steps to ensure you can recreate this comforting dish perfectly every time.
- Preparation of the Chicken: Start by combining the flour, garlic powder, salt, and pepper on a plate. Coat the chicken breasts thoroughly with this mixture, which helps in creating a golden crust when seared.
- Cooking the Chicken: Heat the butter and olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Once hot, add the chicken and cook until golden brown on each side, setting the chicken aside once done. This step is crucial for locking in the juices.
- Making the Sauce: In the same skillet, add more oil and butter, followed by the mushrooms seasoned with salt and pepper. Sauté until golden brown, then stir in minced garlic for aromatic depth. Deglaze the pan with chicken broth and add heavy cream, letting it simmer until slightly thickened.
- Combining Ingredients: Return the chicken to the skillet, immersing it in the sauce. Stir in the grated Parmesan and let everything cook together for a few minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
- Final Touches: Serve the chicken garnished with chopped parsley, which brightens the dish and adds a fresh contrast to the creamy sauce.
Storage Options
This delightful "Chicken with Garlic Mushroom Sauce" can be stored in the refrigerator for up to three days when kept in an airtight container. Reheat it gently on the stove or in the microwave, adding a splash of cream or broth to loosen the sauce if necessary. This dish is best enjoyed fresh, but the flavors can deepen when stored, making the leftovers just as enticing.
Variations and Substitutions

Recipe Card
Chicken with Garlic Mushroom Sauce
Ingredients
For the Chicken:
- ½ cup of all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon of garlic powder
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper adjusted to taste
- 2 medium chicken breasts boneless and skinless, halved lengthwise
- 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter
- 1 tablespoon of olive oil
For the Mushroom Sauce:
- 1 tablespoon of olive oil
- 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter
- 8 ounces of cremini mushrooms thinly sliced
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper adjusted to taste
- 3 cloves of garlic finely minced
- ½ cup of chicken broth
- 1 cup of heavy cream
- 1 cup of freshly grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 tablespoon of fresh parsley finely chopped, for garnishing
Instructions
- Preparation of Chicken: In a shallow dish, combine the flour, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Coat each chicken breast evenly with the flour mixture, ensuring complete coverage on all sides.
- Cooking the Chicken: In a large skillet, heat the olive oil and butter over medium heat until hot but not smoking. Place the chicken in the skillet and cook for approximately 2 minutes on each side, or until the chicken is golden and slightly crisp. Once cooked, remove the chicken from the skillet and set aside on a plate.
- Sauce Preparation: Utilize the same skillet; add an additional tablespoon each of olive oil and butter. Introduce the sliced mushrooms and season with salt and pepper. Sauté for 3 to 5 minutes until the mushrooms are golden brown and have released their moisture.
- Developing the Sauce: Add the minced garlic to the mushrooms, cooking briefly for about 30 seconds until fragrant. Deglaze the skillet with chicken broth, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom. Pour in the heavy cream and bring to a gentle simmer, allowing the sauce to reduce slightly before incorporating the grated Parmesan cheese. Adjust seasoning as necessary.
- Final Assembly: Return the chicken breasts to the skillet, nestling them into the sauce. Spoon some of the sauce over the top of the chicken to ensure it is well coated. Continue to cook on low heat for a few minutes to allow the chicken to absorb the flavors of the sauce.
- Presentation: Serve the chicken immediately, garnished with chopped parsley. This dish pairs well with mashed potatoes, steamed vegetables, or over a bed of pasta to complement the creamy sauce.
