Ingredients Notes
Before you start cooking, let’s break down the key components of this Cowboy Queso Dip to ensure you get the best results:
- Ground Beef: Opt for lean ground beef for a less greasy dip. Remember to season well with salt and pepper to enhance its flavor.
- Cheeses: Gouda adds a nice depth with its slightly sweet, nutty flavor, while Monterey Jack ensures the dip is perfectly creamy. Shred your cheese at home for the best melting quality.
- Black Beans: Rinse them well to remove any canned taste and to prevent the dip from becoming too salty.
- Beer: A splash of beer can be added for an authentic cowboy kick, choose a light lager to keep it flavorful but not overpowering.
How To Make Cowboy Queso Dip
Let's break down the preparation of Cowboy Queso Dip into simple, manageable steps to ensure you get the perfect dip every time:
- Cook the Beef: Start by browning the ground beef in a skillet over medium heat. It’s important to break the beef up into small pieces as it cooks to ensure even cooking and better integration with other ingredients.
- Deglaze: Once the beef is cooked, pour in the beef stock. Let it simmer and scrape off the bits from the bottom of the pan. This adds a rich flavor to your dip.
- Cheese Time: Add the shredded cheeses to the skillet. Stir continuously to melt the cheese smoothly into the beef and broth mixture, creating a creamy base for your dip.
- Add the Goodies: Stir in the black beans, onions, and tomatoes. Let everything simmer together for a few minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
- Final Touch: Remove from heat and stir in the fresh cilantro for a fresh burst of flavor.
- Serve and Enjoy: Serve the dip hot with a side of corn chips for the ultimate dipping experience.
Storage Options
This Cowboy Queso Dip is best enjoyed fresh but if you have leftovers, they can be stored in the refrigerator for up to three days. Ensure it’s in an airtight container to maintain its taste and freshness. For reheating, gently warm it on the stove or in the microwave, adding a splash of milk if the dip seems too thick.
Variations and Substitutions
While the classic Cowboy Queso Dip is a crowd-pleaser, feel free to tweak it to suit your taste or dietary needs:
- Meat Variations: Swap ground beef with ground turkey or chorizo for a different flavor profile.
- Cheese Options: If Gouda or Monterey Jack isn’t your thing, try cheddar or pepper jack for a bit of spice.
- No Beer? No Problem: If you prefer not to use beer, substitute it with a dash of beef broth or even water with a squeeze of lime for a little tang.
- Vegan Version: Use plant-based meat substitutes and vegan cheeses to cater to dietary restrictions without compromising on the classic taste.
Recipe Card
Cowboy Queso Dip
Ingredients
- 0.5 pounds of ground beef
- Kosher salt to taste
- Ground pepper to taste
- ⅔ cup of beef stock
- ½ cup of Gouda cheese finely shredded
- 1 ¼ cups of Monterey Jack cheese finely shredded
- ⅔ cup of black beans drained and thoroughly rinsed
- ¼ cup of red onion finely diced
- 8 ounces of chopped tomatoes canned, drained
- ¼ cup of fresh cilantro finely chopped
- Corn chips for serving (optional)
Instructions
- Preparation of Ground Beef: Utilize a large skillet and set it over a medium heat source. Introduce the ground beef into the skillet. As it cooks, use a wooden spoon to fragment the beef into smaller pieces, ensuring uniform cooking. This process should take approximately 3-4 minutes.
- Deglazing and Reduction: Following the browning of the beef, add the beef stock to the skillet. Employ a spatula to scrape the caramelized particles from the bottom of the pan, thereby incorporating them back into the liquid. Continue to heat the mixture until the liquid volume has reduced by half, a process that should take an additional 3-4 minutes.
- Incorporation of Cheeses: Introduce both types of shredded cheese to the skillet, stirring continuously. The heat should be sufficient to melt the cheese, integrating it smoothly with the beef and broth, which should take about 1-2 minutes.
- Addition of Vegetables and Beans: Add the black beans, diced red onions, and chopped tomatoes to the cheese and beef mixture. Stir thoroughly to ensure all components are evenly distributed. Allow the mixture to simmer for 3-4 minutes, enabling the flavors to meld.
- Final Seasoning and Garnish: Remove the skillet from the heat source. Incorporate the chopped cilantro, mixing it well with the other ingredients.
- Serving: Transfer the prepared Cowboy Queso Dip to a serving dish and present it alongside corn chips for dipping. Serve immediately while warm to best enjoy its flavors.
Krista says
This recipe is super easy to make! We had to adjust the cheese amounts to A LOT more than what the recipe calls for. It was just cheesy meat before we added more. I added jarred queso to get the cheese dip texture and make it dippable. The flavors are great though!
