Ingredient Notes

Every great recipe starts with great ingredients, and this Dill Pickle Macaroni Salad is no exception. Here’s a closer look at what makes each component shine:

Cellentani or Corkscrew Pasta: These fun, spiral shapes hold onto the creamy dressing and pickle chunks beautifully.
Dill Pickles: Opt for baby dill pickles for their crisp texture and balanced flavor. Don’t forget the juice—it’s the secret to the dressing’s tangy kick!
Sharp Cheddar Cheese: The sharper the better! The bold flavor of the cheese complements the pickles and adds a satisfying bite.
Mayonnaise and Sour Cream: This duo creates a creamy, tangy base for the dressing. Use full-fat for the best texture.
Fresh Dill: While dried dill works in a pinch, fresh dill adds a bright, herbaceous note that elevates the dish.

How To Make Dill Pickle Macaroni Salad

Don’t let the bold flavors fool you—this salad is a breeze to make! With just a few simple steps, you’ll have a dish that’s ready to impress. Here’s how to do it:

Cook the Pasta: Start by boiling a large pot of salted water. Add your cellentani or corkscrew pasta and cook it until it’s al dente (firm to the bite). Once done, drain the pasta and give it a quick rinse with cold water to stop the cooking process and prevent sticking. Shake off any excess water and transfer the pasta to a large mixing bowl.
Make the Dressing: In a small bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, sour cream, dill pickle juice, onion powder, and fresh dill. This creamy, tangy dressing is the heart of the salad, so make sure it’s well combined.
Combine Everything: Add the diced dill pickles and cubed cheddar cheese to the pasta. Pour the dressing over the top and gently stir until everything is evenly coated. The key here is to mix thoroughly but carefully to avoid breaking the pasta or cheese.
Season and Garnish: Taste the salad and season with kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper as needed. Finish it off with a sprinkle of fresh dill for a pop of color and flavor.
Chill and Serve: For the best results, let the salad chill in the fridge for at least 10 minutes before serving. This allows the flavors to meld together beautifully.

Keeping It Fresh: Storage and Reheating Tips

One of the best things about this salad is how well it keeps, making it a fantastic make-ahead dish. Here’s how to store and enjoy it later:

Storage Tips:

Refrigerator: Store the salad in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. The flavors will continue to develop, making it even tastier over time.
Freezing: Unfortunately, this salad doesn’t freeze well due to the mayonnaise-based dressing, which can separate when thawed.

Reheating Tips:

This salad is best served cold, so there’s no need to reheat it. Simply give it a good stir before serving to redistribute the dressing.

Variations and Substitutions

While this recipe is pretty perfect as is, there’s always room to tweak it to suit your tastes or what’s in your pantry. Here are some ideas to get creative:

Pasta Swap: No cellentani? Use elbow macaroni, rotini, or penne instead.
Cheese Choices: Swap sharp cheddar for pepper jack, gouda, or even feta for a different flavor profile.
Pickle Preferences: Try bread-and-butter pickles for a sweeter twist or spicy pickles for a kick.
Add-Ins: Toss in some diced ham, crispy bacon, or hard-boiled eggs for extra protein.
Lighter Option: Use Greek yogurt instead of sour cream for a tangy, lower-calorie dressing.

If you’re looking for a dish that’s equal parts comforting and exciting, this Dill Pickle Macaroni Salad is it. It’s creamy, tangy, crunchy, and cheesy—all in one bite. Plus, it’s ridiculously easy to make and even easier to love. Whether you’re heading to a potluck, hosting a backyard BBQ, or just craving something delicious, this salad is a must-try.
