Ingredients Notes
Before diving into making Herb Oven Roasted Potatoes, let’s chat about the key ingredients to ensure your dish turns out perfectly every time:
- Potatoes: Opt for a variety like Yukon Gold for the best results; they hold their shape well and have a naturally buttery flavor.
- Olive Oil: This helps crisp the potatoes and carries the flavors of the herbs beautifully. Don’t skimp here; good quality oil can make a difference.
- Dried Herbs: While I’ve recommended thyme, rosemary, and parsley, feel free to adjust the quantities based on what’s available or your preference. Fresh herbs are also a fabulous upgrade if you have them on hand!
- Garlic: Minced fresh for the best flavor punch, but garlic powder works in a pinch if you’re short on time or fresh cloves.
- Parmesan: This is optional but highly recommended for an extra touch of umami and saltiness. Freshly grated works best.
How To Make Herb Oven Roasted Potatoes
Let’s break down the Herb Oven Roasted Potatoes recipe into manageable, easy-to-follow steps:
- Preheat Your Oven: Start by heating your oven to 400°F. A hot oven is crucial for getting that golden crust on your potatoes.
- Prep the Potatoes: While the oven heats, dice your potatoes into even 1-inch cubes to ensure they cook uniformly. Toss them in a large bowl with olive oil to coat thoroughly—this helps the herbs and seasonings adhere and promotes even cooking.
- Season Generously: Add the thyme, rosemary, parsley, minced garlic, and sea salt to the oiled potatoes. Mix well to ensure every piece is evenly coated with the herb mixture.
- Arrange for Baking: Spread the potatoes out on a large baking sheet in a single layer to maximize the surface area exposed to heat, which is key for achieving that sought-after crispiness.
- Bake to Perfection: Place the tray in the oven and bake for 1 hour, turning the potatoes halfway through to ensure they brown nicely on all sides.
- Finish and Serve: Once baked, transfer the potatoes to a serving dish. Sprinkle with additional sea salt and shredded Parmesan if desired before serving. This final touch of seasoning makes all the difference!
Storage Options
Herb Oven Roasted Potatoes are best enjoyed fresh, but if you find yourself with leftovers, they reheat quite well. Store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days. When you're ready to enjoy them again, reheat in the oven at 350°F until they're warm and crispy again. Avoid the microwave as it can make them soggy.
Variations and Substitutions
The beauty of Herb Oven Roasted Potatoes lies in their versatility. Here are some fun twists and substitutions to keep this recipe fresh and exciting:
- Swap the Herbs: Not a fan of rosemary or want to try something new? Swap it out for oregano, basil, or even a pinch of cayenne for a spicy kick.
- Different Oils: While olive oil is a classic choice, feel free to use avocado oil or even a bit of melted butter for a richer flavor.
- Add-Ins: Consider adding chopped onions or bell peppers in the mix before roasting for an extra layer of flavor and color.
- Cheese Variations: While Parmesan is suggested, feel free to experiment with other hard cheeses like Pecorino Romano or even a sprinkle of crumbled feta for a tangy twist.
Recipe Card
Herb Oven Roasted Potatoes
Ingredients
- 3 pounds of potatoes diced into 1-inch cubes
- ⅓ cup of olive oil
- 1 tablespoon of dried thyme
- 1 tablespoon of dried rosemary
- 1 tablespoon of dried parsley
- 2-3 cloves of garlic minced
- ½ to 1 tablespoon of sea salt
- ¼ cup of shredded Parmesan cheese optional
Instructions
- Preheating the Oven: Begin by setting your oven to preheat at a temperature of 400 degrees Fahrenheit. This step is critical to ensure the oven reaches the appropriate temperature for cooking.
- Potato Preparation: In a substantial mixing bowl, combine the diced potatoes with the olive oil. Toss the potatoes thoroughly to ensure they are evenly coated with the oil, setting the stage for even cooking and optimal flavor absorption.
- Adding Seasonings: To the oiled potatoes, add the dried thyme, rosemary, parsley, minced garlic, and sea salt. Mix these ingredients well to uniformly coat the potatoes with the seasonings, thereby enhancing their flavor profile.
- Arranging the Potatoes: Transfer the seasoned potatoes to a large baking sheet, spreading them out into a single layer. This arrangement allows each potato cube maximum exposure to the oven’s heat, facilitating an even roast.
- Roasting Process: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and roast the potatoes for a total duration of one hour. It is advisable to turn the potatoes halfway through the cooking time, which promotes an even browning on all sides.
- Final Touches and Serving: Once the potatoes are roasted to a golden brown perfection, remove them from the oven and transfer to a serving dish. If desired, enhance their flavor by sprinkling additional sea salt and shredded Parmesan cheese over the hot potatoes before serving. This final garnish adds a delightful savory note to the dish.
