Ingredients Notes
The Kentucky Butter Cake Cookies recipe uses straightforward ingredients that are easily customizable but here are a few tips to make your cookies truly stand out.
- White Cake Mix: Opt for a high-quality white cake mix for the best texture and flavor base.
- Butter: Using unsalted butter allows you to control the saltiness in both the cookies and the glaze, enhancing the natural sweetness.
- Eggs: Make sure your eggs are at room temperature to ensure they mix evenly into the batter, providing a smooth consistency.
- Vanilla Extract: A good quality vanilla extract will enhance the buttery flavor of the glaze, giving a rich aroma and taste to the cookies.
How To Make Kentucky Butter Cake Cookies
Let's break down the Kentucky Butter Cake Cookies recipe into simple, detailed steps to ensure your baking success.
- Preparation: Start by preheating your oven to 350°F and lining your baking sheet with parchment paper. This ensures your cookies will not stick and makes cleanup a breeze.
- Making the Dough: In a large bowl, thoroughly mix the white cake mix with beaten eggs and melted butter until well combined. The key here is to ensure there are no lumps and the batter is smooth.
- Shaping the Cookies: Using a tablespoon-sized cookie scoop, drop the dough onto your prepared sheet, spacing the cookies about 2 inches apart to allow room for slight spreading.
- Baking: Bake the cookies for 7-8 minutes. They may seem soft and underdone when you first remove them, but they will continue to set as they cool on the baking sheet, achieving the perfect texture.
- Cooling: Allow the cookies to cool on the sheet for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely. This resting phase is crucial for the cookies to firm up without becoming too hard.
- Glazing: For the glaze, combine butter, sugar, water, and vanilla in a saucepan and heat until the sugar dissolves, then spoon it over the cooled cookies. The glaze should be smooth and pourable, adding a luscious finish to each cookie.
- Final Touch: Once the glaze has set, dust the cookies with powdered sugar for a sweet, festive look.
Storage Options
Kentucky Butter Cake Cookies can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week, ensuring they stay fresh and delicious. For longer storage, you can freeze the unglazed cookies for up to 3 months; simply thaw and add the glaze before serving for a just-baked taste.
Variations and Substitutions
While the classic Kentucky Butter Cake Cookies are delightful, here are some creative variations and substitutions to tailor them to your taste or dietary needs.
- Gluten-Free Adaptation: Use a gluten-free cake mix to accommodate those with gluten sensitivities without compromising on taste or texture.
- Vegan Version: Substitute eggs with applesauce or a commercial egg replacer, and use vegan butter for both the cookies and glaze.
- Flavor Twists: Add lemon zest to the cookie batter and replace vanilla extract with lemon extract in the glaze for a citrusy twist.
- Nutty Add-in: Mix finely chopped pecans or walnuts into the dough for an added crunch and nutty flavor, enhancing the richness of the cookies.
With these insights and tips, you’re all set to bake a batch of mouth-watering Kentucky Butter Cake Cookies that might just become your new favorite treat!

- 2 large eggs thoroughly beaten
- 6 tablespoons of unsalted butter melted
- ½ teaspoon of fine salt
Glaze
- ¼ cup of unsalted butter
- ½ cup of granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon of water
- 2 teaspoons of pure vanilla extract
- Powdered sugar for dusting
Instructions
- Preparation: Begin by preheating your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (177 degrees Celsius). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper to ensure that the cookies can be removed easily after baking.
- Cookie Dough Preparation: In a sizable mixing bowl, combine the white cake mix with the beaten eggs and melted butter. Stir the mixture vigorously until it achieves a uniform and smooth consistency.
- Forming the Cookies: Utilize a tablespoon-sized cookie scoop to portion the dough, arranging each scoop on the prepared baking sheet, spaced approximately 2 inches apart to allow for expansion during baking.
- Baking: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 7-8 minutes. The cookies should be removed from the oven while still soft to the touch; they will continue to firm up as they cool on the baking sheet.
- Cooling: Allow the cookies to rest on the baking sheet for 5 minutes post-baking, then transfer them to a wire cooling rack to cool completely.

Place the saucepan over medium-low heat, stirring constantly, until the sugar has fully dissolved and the mixture is homogeneous, approximately 4-5 minutes.
- Applying the Glaze: Once the cookies have cooled, drizzle the glaze evenly over each cookie, allowing it to set before proceeding.
- Finishing Touches: After the glaze has set, dust the cookies lightly with powdered sugar to add a touch of sweetness and visual appeal.
