There's something magical about transforming beloved candy flavors into baked goods, and that's exactly how the Mounds Brownies came to be a family treasure in our household. Growing up, Mounds bars were my mother's absolute favorite—she adored the coconut and chocolate combo. One rainy afternoon, armed with a brownie mix and a creative urge, we decided to surprise her with a homemade dessert that incorporated her favorite candy flavors. As we mixed, layered, and laughed, not only did we create a delicious treat, but we also crafted a cherished memory. Now, every time I whip up a batch of these Mounds Brownies, I'm transported back to that special day in the kitchen with my mom, filled with love, laughter, and the sweet scent of coconut and chocolate.

The Mounds Brownies stand out for their sublime texture and flavor fusion, making them an irresistible treat for coconut and chocolate lovers alike.

First, the base of these brownies is ultra-fudgy, providing the perfect canvas for the rich toppings.

The middle layer of shredded coconut combined with condensed milk and powdered sugar creates a sweet, creamy filling that mimics the center of a Mounds bar.

Finally, the smooth, melt-in-your-mouth chocolate fudge frosting adds a decadent finish. These brownies are not only a crowd-pleaser for their taste but also for their visual appeal and satisfying texture, making them perfect for any gathering or as a special treat.

Ingredients Notes

Creating Mounds Brownies involves a delightful blend of textures and flavors. Here's what you need to know about the ingredients:

• Fudge Brownie Base: Start with your favorite fudge brownie recipe or a boxed mix for convenience. This provides a rich, chocolatey foundation.
• Shredded Coconut: The coconut adds a chewy texture and tropical sweetness, key to mimicking the candy bar's signature flavor.
• Condensed Milk: This helps bind the coconut layer and adds moisture and sweetness.
• Powdered Sugar: Enhances the sweetness and helps thicken the coconut layer.
• Chocolate Fudge Frosting: A ready-to-use frosting makes for a glossy, luscious topping that's easy to spread and rich in flavor.

How To Make Mounds Brownies

Here’s how to make your own Mounds Brownies, ensuring a perfect treat every time:

1. Prepare the Brownie Base: Begin by baking your chosen fudge brownie mix in a 9 x 13 pan according to the recipe or package instructions. Allow the brownies to cool completely, which is crucial for the layers to adhere properly without the brownies becoming soggy.
2. Create the Coconut Layer: While the brownies cool, mix together the shredded coconut, condensed milk, and powdered sugar until well combined. This mixture should be thick and creamy. Spread it evenly over the cooled brownies, creating a dense layer of sweet coconut filling.
3. Melt the Frosting: For a smooth, easy-to-spread topping, microwave the can of chocolate fudge frosting (after removing the foil) for about 30 seconds or until it becomes pourable. Be careful not to overheat, as this can cause the frosting to separate.
4. Top with Frosting: Pour the melted frosting over the coconut layer, using a spatula to spread it evenly. This will seal in the coconut mixture and add a glossy, chocolatey finish.
5. Cool and Set: Let the frosted brownies cool at room temperature until the chocolate sets completely. This is essential for the layers to firm up, making the brownies easier to cut and serve.

Storage Options

Mounds Brownies can be stored at room temperature in an airtight container for up to three days, ensuring they retain their moist texture and rich flavors. For longer storage, refrigerate them for up to a week. If you prefer a firmer texture, chilling the brownies also makes them easier to slice. Freezing is another option; wrap individual slices in plastic wrap and store them in a freezer-safe bag for up to three months. Thaw at room temperature for a few hours or overnight in the refrigerator before enjoying.

Variations and Substitutions

Tailor the Mounds Brownies to suit your taste or dietary needs with these simple swaps and variations:

• Brownie Base: Use a gluten-free brownie mix if you're avoiding gluten without sacrificing the rich chocolate flavor.
• Coconut Layer: For a lighter coconut layer, substitute half of the condensed milk with coconut cream to enhance the coconut flavor while cutting down on the sweetness.
• Vegan Version: Opt for a vegan brownie mix, vegan condensed milk, and a dairy-free chocolate frosting to cater to vegan dietary preferences.
• Nutty Addition: Add chopped almonds to the coconut layer for an extra crunch, mimicking the Almond Joy candy bar for a delightful twist.

These modifications allow you to customize the brownies while keeping the preparation simple and enjoyable!
