Recipe Steps:

Let’s break down the steps to create this comforting Slow Cooker American Goulash:

  • Step 1: Start by browning and crumbling the ground beef in a large skillet, along with the finely diced sweet onion and green pepper. Cook until the meat is fully cooked and the veggies are softened. Drain any excess grease to keep the dish from being too oily.
  • Step 2: Transfer the cooked beef mixture to your slow cooker. This will be the base for your goulash.
  • Step 3: Add the minced garlic, pasta sauce, tomato sauce, petite diced tomatoes, water, Italian seasoning, and granulated sugar to the slow cooker. Stir everything together to ensure the flavors start to meld. Remember, hold off on adding the macaroni for now.
  • Step 4: Cover the slow cooker and set it to cook on low for 6-8 hours or on high for 2-4 hours. This slow cooking process is crucial for allowing the flavors to deepen and develop.
  • Step 5: About an hour before you’re ready to serve, stir in the uncooked elbow macaroni. Cover and continue cooking until the noodles are al dente, or softer if that’s how you like them.
  • Step 6: Once the macaroni is cooked to your liking, your goulash is ready to serve! Dish it up with some fresh garlic bread and a crisp salad for a complete meal.”

Storage Options:

This Slow Cooker American Goulash is not only delicious but also great for leftovers! Here are some storage options to keep in mind:

  • Refrigeration: Store any leftover goulash in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. Reheat in the microwave or on the stove until warmed through.
  • Freezing: If you have a lot of leftovers, you can freeze the goulash for up to 3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight and reheat as above.
  • Portioning: Consider dividing the goulash into individual portions before storing. This makes for easy reheating and ensures you only defrost what you need.”

Variations and Substitutions:

This Slow Cooker American Goulash is quite versatile, and you can easily make it your own with a few tweaks:

  • Protein Swap: Not a fan of beef? Try using ground turkey or chicken for a lighter option.
  • Veggie Boost: Feel free to add more vegetables like mushrooms, zucchini, or carrots for added nutrition and flavor.
  • Cheese Please: For a cheesy twist, stir in some shredded cheddar or mozzarella during the last 30 minutes of cooking.
  • Spice It Up: Add a pinch of red pepper flakes or some hot sauce if you like your goulash with a bit of a kick.
