Ingredients Notes
To make the most out of the Cheesy Kielbasa Pasta recipe, understanding your ingredients is key. Here are some tips:
- Kielbasa Selection: Opt for turkey kielbasa for a lighter fare or traditional pork for full flavor. Ensure it's fully cooked before adding to the dish.
- Cheese Choices: Freshly grated Parmesan from the block melts better and adds a richer flavor than pre-shredded varieties.
- Pasta Pointers: Penne works beautifully as it holds onto the creamy sauce, but feel free to experiment with other types like fusilli or rigatoni.
- Cream Considerations: Heavy cream gives a luxurious texture to the sauce, but for a lighter version, half-and-half can be substituted.
How To Make Cheesy Kielbasa Pasta
Here’s how to whip up this comforting Cheesy Kielbasa Pasta with ease:
- Step 1: Preparing the Kielbasa: Start by slicing the kielbasa into 1-inch pieces on an angle to maximize surface area for browning. Brown the slices in olive oil over medium heat in a dutch oven, creating a savory base for the dish.
- Step 2: Sauteing the Base: Post kielbasa, use the same pot to sauté onions with salt and pepper. A splash of chicken stock helps deglaze the pan, picking up all the flavorful bits left behind.
- Step 3: Cooking the Pasta: Directly add dry pasta and the remaining stock along with heavy cream to the pot. This technique not only simplifies cleaning but also infuses the pasta with flavor as it cooks.
- Step 4: Combining Ingredients: Return the browned kielbasa to the pot, add chopped roasted red peppers, and let them mingle under cover to unify the flavors.
- Step 5: Finishing Touches: Finally, stir in the shredded cheese off-heat to ensure a smooth, creamy sauce, then garnish with fresh parsley for a burst of color and freshness.
Storage Options
Cheesy Kielbasa Pasta tastes best when served fresh, but if you find yourself with leftovers, they store quite well. Cool the pasta completely before transferring it to an airtight container. It will keep in the refrigerator for up to three days. For longer storage, freeze it in airtight containers for up to two months. Reheat on the stove over low heat, adding a splash of milk or water to loosen the sauce.
Variations and Substitutions
Cheesy Kielbasa Pasta is wonderfully versatile, allowing for various tweaks to suit your taste or dietary needs:
- Meat Variations: Swap kielbasa for chorizo for a spicier kick, or use sliced chicken sausage for a lighter option.
- Pasta Alternatives: Gluten-free pasta can be used in place of penne for those avoiding gluten without sacrificing texture or flavor.
- Dairy Adjustments: Use a blend of mozzarella and cheddar for a different cheese profile, or a plant-based cream and vegan cheese if dairy-free.
- Vegetable Add-ins: Spinach or kale can be tossed in with the roasted peppers for an added nutritional boost.
Recipe Card
Cheesy Kielbasa Pasta
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons of olive oil
- 12 ounces of turkey kielbasa or pork, pre-cooked
- 1 cup of finely diced yellow onion
- ½ teaspoon of salt
- ⅛ teaspoon of ground black pepper
- 2 cloves of garlic minced
- 3 cups of dry penne pasta
- 2 cups of chicken stock
- ½ cup of heavy cream
- 6 ounces of jarred roasted red peppers drained and roughly chopped
- 1 cup of finely shredded Parmesan cheese freshly grated from the block
- 1 tablespoon of freshly minced parsley
Instructions
- Preparation of Kielbasa: Begin by cutting the kielbasa diagonally into 1-inch segments to enhance the aesthetic and flavor exposure. Heat one tablespoon of olive oil in a large, heavy-bottomed dutch oven over medium heat. Place the kielbasa pieces in the pan in a single layer and sauté them for approximately 2 minutes on each side or until they are adequately browned. Once done, transfer the kielbasa to a plate and set aside temporarily.
- Sautéing the Onions: In the same dutch oven, add the remaining tablespoon of olive oil along with the diced onions, salt, and pepper. To facilitate the deglazing of the pan, add a modest amount—about 2 tablespoons—of chicken stock. Utilize a wooden spoon to scrape up the flavorful browned bits from the bottom of the pan. Continue to cook the onions for 2 minutes, stirring regularly until they are soft.
- Cooking the Pasta: Introduce the dry penne pasta into the pot, along with the remaining chicken stock and the heavy cream. Stir the mixture thoroughly to combine. Cover the dutch oven with a lid and allow the pasta to cook for 12 minutes. It's crucial to stir the pasta intermittently, especially at the halfway point, to prevent it from sticking to the bottom of the pot.
- Reintegrating the Kielbasa: Add the previously cooked kielbasa and the chopped roasted red peppers to the pot. Stir the components to integrate them fully and then cover the pot again, allowing the mixture to simmer for an additional 2 minutes to blend the flavors.
- Adding the Cheese: Remove the pot from the heat. Incorporate the shredded Parmesan cheese, stirring continuously with a wooden spoon until the cheese is completely melted and evenly distributed throughout the pasta.
- Garnishing and Serving: Finally, sprinkle freshly minced parsley over the pasta before serving to add a touch of freshness and color. Serve the dish immediately to enjoy its full flavor and creamy texture.
